Named in Honor of Margaret Jacoby Gates

Margaret Jacoby Gates graduated from Indiana High School in 1937 and entered Clearfield Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Sent to Atlantic City and then Fort Dix, where she prepared to be on the front lines wearing a helmet, gas mask and carry all her equipment while sliding under barbed wire with bullets being shot over her head.
Her unit traveled to England near Melvern in a hospital until D-Day on June 6, 1944 when she was sent to South Hampton, France. Margaret was responsible for two wards treating patients with various injuries from gunshot wounds, gastro-intestional problems stemming from tension, and broken bones and including psychiatric care. She became close to the patients, as she would help them to write letters home. They also cared for POW until they were healthy. She worked here during The Battle of the Bulge and until the war ended.
Margaret Jacoby Gates was enlisted from 1943-1946 She was First Lieutenant, in the Army Nurse Corp. European Theatre of Operations; England-1944, France - 1944 - D- Day 1945, Discharged 1946
